Strengthening Democracy from the Ground Up
FUNDEPRODE’s commitment to human rights and democratic development is realized through an approach of technical solidarity and capacity transfer. We recognize that a nation’s social fabric is strengthened from its foundations—within communities and the organizations that work directly with the most vulnerable citizens.
Core Objective: Social Action through "Institutional Mentorship"
This initiative arises from the need to close the technical and management gap that exists between large civil society organizations and smaller, community-based, or grassroots groups. FUNDEPRODE takes on a proactive role as an "umbrella" or "flagship" organization, whose purpose is not only to implement its own programs but also to empower other key actors.
- Support for Smaller NGOs: Many essential organizations lack technical capacity in critical areas (access to international funding, resource management, monitoring and evaluation). We provide this high-level mentorship to ensure their sustainability and expand their impact.
- Training for Grassroots Organizations: The focus is placed on groups essential to community life and local governance, such as neighborhood committees, women’s groups, youth associations, and community networks. Through intensive workshops and personalized accompaniment, FUNDEPRODE trains these leaders in:
- Human Rights-Based Project Design: From identifying community needs to drafting funding proposals, ensuring project designs are effective and aligned with international human rights standards.
- Institutional Governance and Transparency: Establishing strong internal structures, transparent financial management, accountability mechanisms, and strategic planning—essential elements for building public trust and accessing resources.
Impact on the General Citizenry
FUNDEPRODE’s interest in serving the general public is the cornerstone of this program. By strengthening grassroots organizations, we are not merely improving an NGO’s management—we are directly and indirectly strengthening the democratic social fabric.
When a neighborhood committee can design a viable project to improve access to clean water, or when a women’s group secures funding for an economic empowerment program, the result is:
- Greater Local Advocacy Capacity: Communities gain tools to actively demand and participate in decisions affecting their daily lives.
- Reduced Vulnerability: Local organizations become more resilient and effective in addressing critical social issues (violence, education, health), positively impacting the rights of their members.
- Promotion of Democratic Culture: Participation, transparency, and accountability are fostered at the grassroots level, setting a precedent for good governance nationwide.
In summary, through "Institutional Mentorship," FUNDEPRODE invests in civil society’s potential, ensuring that human rights defenders and community leaders have the tools to drive lasting, autonomous change for the benefit of all citizens.
